Order of Malta and St John’s Ambulance work together at Remembrance Day Service

The Order of Malta and St John's Ambulance-Kenya worked together to provide refreshments for those attending the Remembrance Day Service at the Commonwealth War Cemetery in Nairobi on Sunday 14th November.
After standing for a considerable length of time many of the older members of the congregation were very grateful to be provided with a welcome cup of tea and a biscuit.
The Order of Malta and St John's Ambulance-Kenya have an excellent relationship in Kenya and we do all we can to support each other. Our work is very similar and our mission to help others ties in well...

To get a better understanding of the contribution this group makes to the success of the TB programme in Nairobi, Alice Murphy recently spent time 'shadowing' a team whilst they carried out their work in the Mukuru slum of Nairobi. Her account of the day is below:
The day began at the Health Clinic at the Remand Prison where I meet with Purity and Bernice to gather drugs and information. After finding a reasonably secure place to leave the vehicle (next to the Chief's office) we set off on foot to begin the house-to-house visits... read more

LAMU DISTRICT MATERNITY SHELTER
We are moving in the right direction with the Lamu District Maternity Shelter – albeit rather slowly. We have received interest and support from many organisations in Kenya to assist us with realising the targets for this project.
This is encouraging. However, it is vital that before we embark on such a challenging project we carry out full assessments in the area and have the funding in place to see the project through to completion... read more
TERRY HOPE CENTRE
HANDOVER OF THE CENTRE TO THE HOPE SELF HELP GROUP
AND TERRY STOBBS

It is with a certain pride, tinged with sadness, that our 'hands on' involvement with the Terry Hope Centre comes to an end at the end of 2010. When the Order of Malta first got involved in this small orphan feeding project the orphans were gathering in open space in the middle of a slum to have their Saturday lunch... read more
MECKOW AQUAPUR
PROVIDING CLEAN, SAFE DRINKING WATER TO THE HURUMA VILLAGE COMMUNITY
Two further Meckow Aquapur units arrived in Mombasa port in mid November. The three are being installed as this is being written. The Huruma village community are delighted to see that they are being provided with safe, clean drinking water.
This will mean that they no longer have to risk their health by drinking the unclean water, as the nearby river water will now be turned into water that is 100% safe and clean for human consumption.

OTHER NEWS
Patricia Talbot visited Kenya in October 2010. As the Vice President of the British Association of the Order of Malta we were very pleased to receive her support.

Whilst in Kenya she spent time with the Malteser International Health Clinics in Nairobi and also found time to visit the Lamu District Hospital to see first hand the desperate need for help with maternal healthcare in that region.
She had the honour to be invited as the Chief Guest to the St John's Ambulance national competition, where she met many of the St John's volunteers and staff.
The Order of Malta had a small charity stand at the Christmas Craft Fair in Nairobi. This was a great opportunity to meet many of the public and tell them about our work here, with particular focus on the Terry Hope Centre and Malteser International. |
